FAMILY ADVOCACY

IEP Advocacy

For Families & Caregivers

Why Dr. Khoury

My expertise isn't theoretical — it's lived. I spent my own academic life undiagnosed, learning to navigate a system that didn't recognize what I was experiencing. That perspective shapes every IEP meeting I walk into: I don't just know the law, I know what it feels like to be the student no one understood. I see what others miss, because I lived what they're trying to understand.

A Different Kind of Advocate

Most special education advocates step in after something has already gone wrong. I built my practice around a different idea: that the strongest outcomes for children come from proactive partnership between parents and schools — not crisis response after trust has already broken down. I help families understand the special education process, build collaborative relationships with their child's school team, and put the right structures in place before conflict arises. And when an issue does happen — because sometimes it does, despite everyone's best efforts — I'm already there, already trusted, ready to advocate.

This philosophy is the foundation of everything I do. I wrote about it for The Inner Circle, in a piece on why the partnership between parents and teachers may be the most important relationship in a child's education.

What Working With Me Looks Like

Curious what working with me actually looks like? Explore each step below.

Who I Am

When choosing a special education advocate, you need more than just legal knowledge — you need a strategic partner dedicated to empowering your family and ensuring your child’s long-term success. I use my personal and professional experience to offer a unique, collaborative approach that transforms conflict into partnership by mentoring parents to become effective, knowledgeable advocates themselves. I provide expert analysis of IEPs and evaluations, strategic support in high-stakes meetings, and professional communication coaching — all aimed at fostering a trusting relationship with the school team to secure the truly Individualized Education Program (IEP) your child needs to reach their full potential.

What I Do

From Crisis to Confidence: Building Trust Through Collaborative Advocacy
My goal isn’t just to attend one meeting with you — it’s to equip you with the knowledge and skills to become your child’s most effective, long-term advocate. While I provide expert guidance and support, my primary focus is teaching you how to transform a stressful, adversarial relationship with the school into a powerful, collaborative partnership.

Why Parent Empowerment Is My Priority
The legal framework of special education, the IDEA, is built on the principle of parents and schools working as a team. However, confusion, poor communication, and a lack of clear documentation often lead to conflict.

My approach is different. I see my role as a mentor and strategist who works to bridge the communication gap, fostering an environment where trust can thrive.

The Focus: Learning to Lead Your Child’s Team
I move beyond just solving the immediate crisis and focus on your growth as an advocate:

  • Understanding the “Why”: I decode the confusing legal and educational jargon so you understand the purpose behind every document and meeting.
  • Mastering Communication: I teach you how to communicate effectively, professionally, and strategically in writing.
  • Preparation Is Power: I work with you to ensure you walk into every meeting fully prepared.

The Collaborative Advantage

  • Positive, Professional Relationships: I model and teach respectful, data-driven communication.
  • Focus on FAPE, Not Fighting: My strategy centers on using the data from your child’s evaluations.
  • Sustained Success: You won’t need an advocate forever — you’ll be empowered to sustain the relationship yourself.

Ready to stop feeling lost and start leading your child’s educational journey? Contact me to begin building your foundation of collaborative advocacy today.

The Foundation of Trust

Many advocates approach special education as a battle. I believe in building a bridge to success. My philosophy centers on transforming adversarial relationships into effective partnerships, ensuring your child benefits from a cohesive team environment.

I Believe in Partnership, Not Protraction

A contentious relationship with the school team often leads to delays, stress, and poor service implementation. I teach you how to maintain a professional, data-driven, and respectful tone.

Beyond the Meeting: Empowering You

  • Speak the Language: Clearly articulate your child’s needs using the appropriate legal and educational terminology.
  • Master the Paper Trail: Draft professional, legally sound communication.
  • Lead with Confidence: Walk into any IEP or 504 meeting prepared, focused, and in control.

Comprehensive Service, Clear Strategy

Challenge You Face My Strategic Solution
Overwhelming Documents Expert Records Review: I analyze IEPs, evaluations, and reports to pinpoint gaps.
Uncertainty in Meetings Strategic Meeting Support: I attend meetings prepared, guiding the conversation.
Confusing Eligibility FIE/Evaluation Guidance: I ensure appropriate, comprehensive evaluations.
Poor Progress Goal Development & Monitoring: I help set measurable, ambitious goals.

How I Build Trust

  • Modeling Professionalism: I guide communication to be data-driven, solution-focused, and non-emotional.
  • Focusing on Shared Goals: I help the team stay centered on the student’s success.
  • Strategic Documentation and Clarity: I ensure all communication and the final IEP are crystal clear and well-documented.
  • Mentoring Collaborative Skills: I coach you on proactive communication, active listening, and fact-based discussions.

Why a Trusting Relationship Matters:

Collaborative Element Why It Matters for Your Child
Consistent Implementation Teachers and therapists are more likely to implement accommodations with fidelity.
Comprehensive Planning You are the expert on your child — collaboration integrates home and school data.
Effective Problem-Solving Trust allows for quick, informal resolution instead of formal disputes.
Long-Term Mental Health A collaborative environment reduces stress for the entire family.

I’m here to help you turn educational challenges into collaborative victories.

When Trust Is Broken

Empowering Your Child’s Education When Schools Refuse to Collaborate

Schools make mistakes, and many times the school will collaborate with parents to find a solution. But what happens when the school doesn’t take ownership when a mistake is made, and refuses to collaborate with parents?

Why Choose Me

The Dr. Khoury Difference

My advocacy is built on more than just legal knowledge; it’s fueled by a profound understanding of what it feels like to struggle in an educational system that wasn’t built for you. I spent years navigating my own academic journey with an undiagnosed learning disability.

Why My Personal Story Is Your Advantage:

  1. Understanding the Invisible Struggle — I recognize the subtle signs of a skill gap disguised as a behavioral issue, and I know what evaluations actually uncover the root cause.
  2. Empathy for the Parent’s Fight — I know what it feels like to be dismissed, and I translate your emotional knowledge of your child into data-driven, professional requests.
  3. A Focus on the Right Accommodations — I seek the specific, high-leverage supports that genuinely remove barriers, not generic ones.
